The Actionscript Debug Player Sucks- A One Line Replacement

February 24th, 2010

No, honestly, it’s just terrible. It’s amazing to me that at this point, the official (and mostly secret) way to debug flash is to use a special debug version of the player. Then you have to configure a text file. But the location apparently changes from version to version. But first, before you can do that, you have to manually uninstall the regular version. And with luck, a lot of detection scripts will blow up on your debug version. Here’s an example of how crystal clear the process is. I mean, c’mon.

So, without delay, here’s what I’m doing now:

     ExternalInterface.call( 'console.log', 'My Debug Message' );

That’s it. Just use the javascript debug console. Requires Firebug in FireFox, and works with the native debuggers in Chrome, IE & Safari.
